PT PLEN EPI and PLN Energi Gas Collaborate to Develop Wild Honeybee Farming in Tanjung Batu Village to Promote Community Economic Self-Reliance
Kutai Kartanegara, 14 June 2026 – As part of their commitment to supporting sustainable development and community empowerment, PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) and PT PLN Energi Gas are implementing a Social and Environmental Responsibility Program (TJSL) titled “Development and Assistance for Kelulut Honey Farming” in Tanjung Batu Village, Tenggarong Seberang Subdistrict, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan.
This program represents a collaborative effort by the two companies to develop local economic potential based on environmentally friendly natural resources while enhancing the community’s capacity to manage kelulut honey farming operations sustainably.
The event began with the SR&E Program Kick-Off held in the Tanjung Batu Village Hall on Friday (June 12). The event was attended by management representatives from PLN EPI and PLN Energi Gas, the Tenggarong Seberang Subdistrict Head, members of the Subdistrict Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimcam), the Tanjung Batu Village Government, and the Tanjung Batu Village Kelulut Honey Farming Group. During the event, a symbolic handover of program assistance took place as a form of the company’s support for the development of the kelulut honey farming business in the village.
In addition to the opening ceremony, participants also received training on the economic potential of kelulut honey and its various byproducts. The material was presented by experienced kelulut honey beekeeping practitioners, providing participants with a comprehensive overview of the business opportunities that can be developed in this sector.
Participants also took part in technical training focused on improving beekeeping capacity. The material covered techniques for kelulut honey production, the process of harvesting honey and propolis, and the practical aspects of processing and extracting propolis—all guided directly by academics and experts in the field. Through these hands-on sessions, the community gained a more comprehensive understanding of the standards for managing high-quality, value-added products. In addition, training was provided on business downstreaming aspects, ranging from product licensing and honey and propolis packaging to product marketing strategies. This material was presented by the Kutai Kartanegara Regency Cooperative and SME Office to strengthen the capacity of the beneficiary groups in developing competitive businesses with broader market access.
This Kelulut Honey Cultivation Development and Mentoring Program is expected to create an alternative source of income for the residents of Tanjung Batu Village while supporting environmental conservation through the development of stingless bee cultivation, which plays a vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance and increasing crop productivity through pollination.
PLN Energi Gas Corporate Secretary Elok Faiqoh Saptining Ratri stated that this program is part of the company’s commitment to creating sustainable added value for the community through the development of local potential that aligns with social, economic, and environmental aspects.
“Through the TJSL collaboration between PLN EPI and PLN Energi Gas, we aim to deliver an empowerment program that not only provides short-term benefits but also fosters long-term economic self-reliance for the community. Stingless bee farming was chosen because it offers promising economic potential while supporting environmental conservation through the bees’ role as natural pollinators. We hope this program can serve as the foundation for a community-based business that continues to grow and has a positive impact on Tanjung Batu Village,” said Elok.
Furthermore, Elok emphasized that the success of the TJSL program is not only measured by the implementation of training activities and the provision of assistance, but also by the community’s ability to manage and develop their businesses independently after the program concludes.
“We believe that collaboration, ongoing mentoring, and community capacity building are the key elements in creating impactful and sustainable TJSL programs. PLN Energi Gas will continue to support empowerment efforts that strengthen the community’s economic resilience while preserving the environment,” she added.
Through this collaboration, PLN EPI and PLN Energi Gas reaffirm their commitment to continuing to deliver TJSL programs that have a tangible impact on the community and the environment. Moving forward, both companies will continue to provide guidance and evaluate the program to ensure the sustainability of the initiative and the achievement of the goal of empowering communities to become self-reliant, productive, and competitive.
This program is expected to transform Tanjung Batu Village into a center for kelulut honey cultivation capable of producing high-quality, high-value products, and to serve as a model for community-based economic development rooted in environmental conservation in Kutai Kartanegara Regency.
